Welcome to the Marine Social-Ecological Systems (MSES) lab in the Department of Coastal Studies at East Carolina University. Our lab studies interdisciplinary research questions related to marine biodiversity conservation, fisheries, and climate change adaptation. We use a mix of geospatial and social science methods to study how people use, manage and govern marine ecosystems and how management and governance influence social and ecological conservation and natural resource management outcomes at multiple scales ranging from local to global. Our research has been supported by multiple agencies including IUCN, NSF, the Belmont Forum, NOAA Sea Grant, the International Climate Initiative, and The Nature Conservancy.
